Welcome to the ISSF Pistol section of the website. For readers new to ISSF, allow me to make an introduction. The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) based in Munich controls shooting sports
at the Olympic Games all the pistol events at the Commonwealth Games and the Oceanias. The main events are 10 and 50 metre pistol, and 25 metre pistol events which require autoloaders or revolvers.
ISSF is different from all the other PNZ shooting disciplines for two reasons. First, only ISSF shooters compete at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Other disciplines have their internationals as
well, but none of those events equal the status of the Olympics or the CWG. The second difference is that everything is done to emphasise the individual shooter and to minimise any technical or
other advantages one person might have over another. Everything being equal and constant, the only variable is the shooter- and that person's skill, talent, motivation and determination.
The ISSF Section has a busy year ahead (2011) with two international events, these being the World Cup in Sydney in late March and the Oceanias in late November, both in Sydney, plus a busy domestic
year. This starts with the Auckland Anniversary competition hosted in Hamilton Pistol Club in late January and the Mainland Summer competition at the Christchurch Pistol Club over Waitangi Weekend.
Both competitions will feature air pistol, and pose a good opportunity to see Olympic and Commonwealth Games pistol shooting in microcosm. Please check out the events page of the website, we expect
other competitions to be added in due course. Then there will be our Nationals which will take place over 10-13 March, also at the Hamilton Pistol Club.
One major development in ISSF is our junior development programme, for high school-college students to take up Air Pistol shooting as a sport. The prize is the McMillan Cup donated by Bruce McMillan,
the first New Zealander to represent his country in pistol shooting at the Munich Olympics in 1972, and who went on to win a Bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch two years later.
Fifteen high schools put up teams to win the Cup in 2010, and the figure is likely to be 20 in 2011.

Let's finish this update by extending congratulations to Alan Earle and Greg Yelavich for winning a Silver medal in the Centre Fire Pairs event at the XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi last October.
Winning medals at prime international events like the Commonwealth Games or the Olympics is ultimately what ISSF is all about. But we like to have some fun getting there!
